A Very Special Cat Show

a bonded pair of young tabby cats

Before my human brought me to the 4-H Pet and Science Symposium the other day, she made a quick visit to a very special cat show! Although it was at the same place I’ve often been for shows, you won’t see me or my siblings at this one. It was Milo’s Sanctuary’s “Walk a Mile in Our Paws” show — a multi-catural convention and special needs cat show. Most of the cats there were looking for homes, and many of them were a little bit different from other kitties.

Milo’s Sanctuary is a rescue that helps special needs cats, but there were several different rescues with cats there. The pair above, Hero and Echo, are from Lifeline for Pets, and they are a bonded pair. Hero, the brother, can’t use his back legs but is otherwise happy and healthy. Echo is his devoted sister. I’m happy to say that there is a adoption pending for the two of them!

Here is the cat show hall.

sooty adoptable tortoiseshell cat

Sooty has some vision issues, but my human thought she was awesome. Of course she would — she’s got tortitude, and that is like catnip to most humans!

alfie, special needs cat at Milo's Sanctuary

The great thing about Milo’s Sanctuary is that they have a Lifetime Care program for kitties like Alfie Cricketheart. Some terrible human shot this guy with a BB gun when he was just 7 weeks old. One of the BBs lodged in his spine, and even though vets removed it, he was paralyzed and incontinent for life. But in spite of what he’s been through, Alfie is the sweetest cat you can imagine. He has a home forever at Milo’s and his care is paid for through sponsorships. You can find out about Milo’s Lifetime Care program here.

Even fancy cats sometimes need rescue, and there were a couple of groups there that specialize in helping breed cats in trouble: Southern California Siamese Rescue and Helping Persian Cats. This little black Exotic kitten was one of Helping Persian Cats’ rescues.

voting tickets for the cat show

The cat show competition wasn’t like the cat shows I’ve been in. Instead of judges looking at the cats, the people attending got to vote for their favorite cats with these tickets.

special needs rescue cat with bag for votes

The votes could be dropped in a bag that was usually taped to the cage, like Marcie’s here. Marcie is blind in one eye and deaf… but she knows where the treats are!

oskar the blind cat's personal appearance

Celebrity cats were there too! Since my human had to leave after only an hour, she missed Lil Bub and Nala the Cat and her sidekick Coffee — but she did see Oskar the Blind Cat. That was pretty funny because she saw Oskar and his human last week at the Purina Better With Pets Summit! Oskar works very hard bringing his message to kitties and humans alike — that 1) special needs cats rule, and 2) life is an adventure and nothing should hold you back. He’s certainly living proof of that!

yanni the therapy cat

And of course, my human had to meet Yanni the therapy cat! Yanni and his human were giving a presentation about therapy cats that afternoon. Unfortunately, it was happening at the same time I had to be at the 4-H table for my own therapy group. But it was awesome that my human got to visit and check out this special cat show!
