I went on a therapy cat visit on Thursday, to the hospital where I mostly see young patients. But for a while there, I was wondering if we were going to make it at all! My human has been sleeping badly all week, and has felt sick, depressed and edgy. Thursday morning she could barely put one foot in front of the other, she was so sad and sleep deprived! I could tell she really didn’t want to do our visit that day, but she finally pulled herself together.
Two dog teams accompanied us (usually we only have one other team), and we three teams covered a lot of rooms! The dogs were too excited about having me around (they were friendly, but, ugh!), so I was glad I did not have to spend much time near them. Other than that, it was a pretty routine visit. Lots of nice kids and staff members got to pet me, and a room where one of the dogs visited requested to see me too. I was a little tired after taking care of my human this week myself, so I only did tricks a couple of times.
But do you know who got the most out of my therapy cat visit? My human! She felt so much better when we were done. She was busy focusing on me and on the patients and nurses, and not so much on all the depressing events of the week. It felt good for her to bring me around to make people feel better. A little while after we got back, she was able to take a nap to catch up on some sleep — something she hadn’t been able to do all week!
So I just want to mention, if you have been having a bad time and are unhappy like my human has been, helping other people (or helping kitties) is a great thing to do! Even if you think you can’t or don’t want to do it. It can’t change big world events, but you will be surprised at how much better it makes you feel.
