So many of you said that I should wear my red and white striped bow tie to my next therapy visit… that I did! Once again, my human and I were the only team. It was nice I got to walk on my leash, but I still would have liked to have had a dog team along. I can’t cover all the floors by myself — there isn’t enough time.
There were gifts for the hospital volunteers in the room where we sign in!
Since my human doesn’t eat gummy anything and her desk is too cluttered for a new notepad, she didn’t take either of these items. It didn’t matter — neither of us show up at these hospitals for perks anyway, other than the perks we get from the therapy visits themselves.
This was a really special group of visits, since my favorite patients were the ones who couldn’t speak English. Of course, they don’t need to with me! I just like to see their faces light up when they see me. That’s when I know that they needed to see me that day. And even if my human can’t communicate with them, it doesn’t matter because I’m the one they want to visit with.
One lady, though, didn’t seem to care that my human only spoke “muy poquito” Spanish — she chatted endlessly with her anyway, while I hung out on the bed. The funny thing was, my human actually understood enough so that she wasn’t totally lost. She knew how to answer when the lady asked my name and everything! The lady had a stack of cards of saints and popes on the stand by her bed and she asked my human to take one. So she looked through them and chose the one that felt right.
She did not read the inside of the card until we got back to the car (it was in English). But here is part of what it said about St. Teresa of Avila: “She is admired as a pioneer feminist and literary figure who has made a great contribution to our knowledge of human psychology.” My human could not have picked a more perfect saint from the stack.
Notepads and gummy candy aside… this was the best gift of them all.
