Therapy Visits – Some Fun, Some Weird

somali cat in hospital ladies room

Here I am in a ladies room at one of the hospitals where I regularly do therapy visits. Because my human chugs down an energy drink before leaving, we always have to make a pit stop. Just to let you know, when she is here or at an airport, where the toilets are industrial-type noisy, she covers my ears before flushing. TMI? But the noise is really disturbing to sensitive kitty ears and she is always looking out for me.

Back in the volunteer room, my human put the bow tie around my neck for our visits. I don’t know why my tie is crooked. I really could use some more neckwear.

This was a nice visit day. We had another team, with a very calm golden retriever. My human let me out on my leash because she knew I was safe around him. But early on, our two teams went our own way, and we covered different parts of the hospital floors.

The funny thing about the patients — they seem to fall into two categories: humans who have no idea who we are or why we are there, and humans whose faces immediately light up when they see me. Then, there is some weirdness too. One gentleman who did not speak English well beckoned to my human and kept asking for something she couldn’t understand. So she came in with me on my leash, thinking he wanted a visit… and then realized he wanted a trash can and was dumping his bedpan! So she handed him the nearest trash can and we left, fast. That was a little embarrassing.

There were a couple of patients who were really fun because they loved me… and they were normally dog people! In fact, one lady with a pillow that said “survivor” on it had family visiting, and one of them took a photo of me with her — because she said otherwise no one would believe it. I got lots of compliments on my looks and my soft fur, and I even showed one guy how I do a high five and shake hands.

In spite of the occasional language barrier and sometimes something strange happening, my human and I really love our visits. I hope I get to go again this week!
