Cat Guy Never Gave Up His Cats for Nearly 20 Years Even to the End..

Two super senior cats know what it is like to be loved. They have been adored and cherished for two decades by a man who rescued them from a rough beginning.

Meet Cali (21) and Chelula (22)!

Oregon Humane Society

Stephen Swearingen was never a pet person until one day (over 30 years ago) he came across a tiny kitten named Erin who needed a home. He wasn’t planning to have a cat, but when they returned, the kitten was still there, so he took her in. One thing led to another, when Erin was at the vet one day, Swearingen met two other cats that had been abandoned. They were Cali and Chelula, and they became part of his life.

In the years that followed, the kitties kept him company and never left his side when he was at home. They sat with him, napped with him, and always reminded him that he was loved. Erin passed away but Cali and Chelula continued their life journey with Swearingen.

Swearingen, at 60, who had been battling diabetes, fell really ill. He never feared death, but he worried about his two cats and what would happen to them. They meant the world to him. When he knew his days drew near, the first thing he had in mind was his cats.

Oregon Humane Society

He wanted to make sure that his cats would be cared for and loved when he could no longer look after them. That’s when he joined the

Friends Forever Program

at the

Oregon Humane Society

to begin planning for his old gals so they could live out their golden years being loved and comforted.

When hospice workers came to Swearingen’s home in late January, every day he shared stories about his cats and how much they meant to him. It brought him joy.

“This man certainly knew how to give and receive love from animals,” Sarah Wheeler told Tom Hallman of

Oregonlive

. “The unconditional love, the simplicity of the relationship. He took such comfort from them.”

Oregon Humane Society

As his time drew to a close, Swearingen requested to be baptized before he departed. The two kitties stayed by his side the entire time, purring away. “I sensed that life had not always been easy. With his cats, he found a powerful love,” Chaplain Curtis Buthe told Hallman.

“The cats didn’t mind the water splashing around… Even when they got some water on them, they stayed with him.”

A few days later, Swearingen had to be moved to a care center when he became gravely ill. Humane Society came to pick up his cats and assured him that his fur children would be in good hands.

He gently petted his beloved feline companions for the last time and said his goodbye.

Oregon Humane Society

Cali and Chelula were given a second chance at life when they met their human dad, and they returned the favor by giving him the warmth and connection that he needed to live a full life.

When Swearingen knew that his cats were going to be cared for and loved, a sense of peace came upon him, and he knew that he was ready to move on.

Five days later, he passed away on Valentine’s day.

With help from the Oregon Human Society, Cali and Chelula are doing very well. “Both cats have been adopted now,” the rescue told

Love Meow

. They are spending their retirement, enjoying the finer things in life, and being surrounded by love and comfort–just like how Swearingen wished for them.

Hello Vancouver!

somali cat in cat carrier under sign at airport on her way to Vancouver

It’s late and my human and I are getting ready for bed, but I wanted to let you all know we made it to Vancouver! We left out of a different, quieter airport this time. There was a layover on the way there, but we saved some driving time so the trip wasn’t that much longer. The TSA guy at the airport loved me. He had just lost his cat of 20 years and I think he was happy to see a kitty while he was working.

Our layover was in San Francisco, and it was really brief. But I got to meet a crazy little toddler. She was delighted to see me and when she wasn’t running all over the place and wearing out her mother, she was nice. My human was glad I, at least, was on a leash!

Customs declaration

This time my human remembered to put me on the Customs Declaration.

It was more crowded at customs this time, so it took longer for us to get to baggage claim. Our friends who we stayed with last time were there to pick us up.

So here I am! Tomorrow we do a few things before checking into a hotel in town! I can’t wait to see what’s in store.

Cats who handle their own problems

Why do cats fight? Because they see the other cat as the source of their issue. Rightly, or not.

Since a cat’s first impulse is varying degrees of independence, they will try to handle things themselves.

Karma takes too long

However, these issues vary by cat, and between cats. Figuring out what the issue is will help solve the problem.

territory threat

By far the largest, and most intractable, reason cats fight is when they feel threatened.

Over the years, I’ve found that the best preventative is a working Cat Civilization. By having three or more cats, each cat’s social instincts are supported and encouraged.

This is how I can bring home a compatible kitten, (from the shelter where they have been vet-checked for illness or problems,) and basically dump them into the middle of my existing cats. I have to do this, because I don’t have currently have the room for Proper Introductions.

When I had ten or more cats and a house that was also a cat rescue, the new cat would spend some time in the quarantine room while I figured out what was going on with them. This let the other cats get used to the idea of a new cat.

Most of the time, my existing cats would be curious and open to being non-hostile. After all, this was their own experience; making friends, and enjoying them.

Often, we don’t have either of these scenarios working for us. We don’t realize we are pushing things too fast, we can’t or didn’t choose for compatibility, and we might be dealing with a cat who has had nothing but bad experiences with other cats.

Such circumstances require Territory Therapy. We reduce the chances of triggering such issues if we try to create an Environment of Abundance.

misplaced play

Two of our cats are giant Maine Coon Cat mixes, and when they are younger, they don’t know their own strength. Tristan loves to play, but is also quick to complain when he winds up a bit squished. (Reverend Jim is 16.5 pounds, and Mithy is now 20.)

Fortunately, Tristan is good friends with everyone, so he does not think it was done on purpose. If we have a less secure relationship between the two cat playmates, such inadvertent hurt feelings can fester and cause problems.

When such incidents occur, I am quick to step in and Shape the Response for them. I remind Mithy he needs to “dial it back” and not be so rough. I remind Tristan that Mithy is just a baby, and he didn’t mean any harm. Then I coo, “They are such good buddies!” and they agree that they are, after all, buddies.

This also happens when Tristan wants Olwyn to play with him, and Olwyn does not want to chase and wrestle. (Which would be always.) He sees her enjoying a toy or the trackball and this makes him want to play with her; only she’s happy playing alone, and the last thing she wants is her head being tackled.

This is my cue to tell Tristan, “She doesn’t want to play. Go play with Mithy. That’s what he’s for.”

Our reassurance that no one meant any harm can do wonders.

Our cats do not have the advantages humans have when it comes to managing detailed communications. And we can sometimes be bad at figuring this stuff out ourselves, to be honest. So helping our cats realize they do not have to be defensive in this situation gives the benefit of the doubt to all participants.

This helps them stay friends.

sheer annoyance

This is what causes conflicts between mellow Reverend Jim and fusspot Princess Olwyn. She likes things done her way and immediately, while he has important window monitoring duties which are higher priority. She thinks he is too rowdy when he wrestles with the Giant Mutant Kitten, while he gets indignant because she never wrestles with the baby at all.

Sometimes, these differing Cat Outlooks erupt in some cranky growling and chasing that we need to step in and soothe.

They both appreciate it.

Cats cannot handle these disputes between themselves as well as they would like. There’s simply a limit to how far growling and chasing can take them, and if we let these bad feelings fester, they would continue to be a source of annoyance. This would encourage each cat to be more emphatic about their feelings the next time, which would only prompt a similar retaliation.

By redirecting each cat to some other interest, while allowing them to express themselves, we create a situation where each of them feel vindicated, and able to stop.

All groups of beings who live together run into this kind of mismatches. I’d like to go out to dinner, but Mr WayofCats only feels up to watching a movie at home. I’ve been trying to finish a computer task so I can do something else, while Mithy decides he needs a lap cuddle immediately. Everybody gives and gets, and with cats, we humans needs to be the ones who makes sure everyone’s needs are met, and everyone’s feelings stay unhurt.

The best things to do about fights is prevent them.

Avoid cat conflicts by being the Boss of Cat Town.

Kitten Too Scared to Leave Her Box at Shelter, Then a Month After Adoption..

A tiny ginger kitten was hiding in her box at the shelter, so scared that she would flinch away from anyone. A young woman took her out of the shelter, and in just a month, everything changed!

Meet Shiloh!

reddit/

yokj6

“She looked so sad and scared… I couldn’t say no,” reddit user

yokj6

said. The kitten was absolutely terrified, but that didn’t stop yokj6 from adopting her. She knew that the kitten wanted to love but just needed someone to help her.

When Shiloh arrived in her new home, she immediately took refuge under the bed and stayed there for the first month. “She would run at any noise. She flinches away from lovins, and her tail has been broken, but she’s a survivor”

“This was taken right before she ran back behind the TV so I could not pet her.”

reddit/

yokj6

yokj6 knew very little about Shiloh’s history, but the kitty had a lot of trust issues with humans. No matter how difficult it was, she was determined to help the kitty learn to love and trust again.

At first yokj6 tried to pet the kitty to show her love, but it wasn’t working. Shiloh would run and hide every time her human tried to get close.

reddit/

yokj6

So she decided to give the kitty some time to calm down and settle into her home, and let her do things on her own terms, hoping that she would come around somehow. Slowly but surely, the little ginger girl began to change.

One day she jumped into my lap and cuddled. I was so happy that I may have cried a little

,” she said.

reddit/yokj6

Then this happened…

Shiloh bonded with another resident cat who is also a rescue. She came out of her shell and started to blossom.

reddit/yokj6

Just a month after she moved into her forever home, she made a complete 180.

Shiloh now loves to follow her mom around the house.

reddit/yokj6

“Shiloh was absolutely terrified of everything and mostly hid under the bed and behind the tv when I first got her.

“Now she loves head butting me.”

reddit/yokj6

The little kitty has come a long way.

Shiloh is no longer the same cat that was found hiding in her box. Now she can’t get enough of attention and cuddles.

reddit/yokj6

With a lot of patience, love and a comfortable home, Shiloh has found love and learned to trust again.

Now her favorite thing is to snuggle with her human mom and drift off to sleep in her arms.
