Beginner Boarding Progression

Today the 3 ski instructors learnt how to teach the beginner boarding progression as all 3 of us need to know it for our level 1 CASI exam in Andorra in March.

Always give simple and clear introduction and DEMO + plenty of repetition and practise time for each one!!

1. Basic Mobility:-

i. Introduction into equipment, including boots, how to hold the board, how to strap in, and how to lie the board on the snow.

ii. Find out which foot they lead with.

iii. Get them to strap in their lead foot.

iv. Get them skating, jumping, hopping, walking around, basically get them used to having a board strapped to their foot.

v. 2 scoots across the slope and place your other foot next to your other binding and seeing how long you can glide for, maintain balanced, letting the terrain stop you.

2. Straight Running:-

i. Start on flat, get the students comfortable to pointing the board downhill, pick a area where the terrain will stop them

ii. Show them how to use their other foot as a brake either dragging their heel or digging their toes into the snow, then take them up higher so they have to use it to stop.

3. ‘J’ Turns:-

i. Continue with straight running, start with heel side turns first, with the students looking over the respected shoulder depending on whether they are goofy or regular. Initiate the turn with the upper body. Keep looking back up hill to close off the turn.

ii. Same again with the toes side turn.

iii. Exercise ‘Gas Pedal’, which is where you explain that when the board is flat you are like pressing the gas pedal either toes up or heel up is taking the their foot of the gas pedal.

4. Side Slipping:-

i. Strap in both feet at this point.

ii. 2 feet orientation.

iii. Practise sliding down the slope which the board facing across the slope, start with your heel first, sliding down then digging the edge in.

iv. Then swap to the toes side and do the same.

5. Falling Leaf:-

i. Start with side slipping down then apply more weight on one leg to make you transverse across, then once across side slip again and apply pressure to the other leg to make them transverse back across.

ii. Repeat these movements all the way down.

6. Isolated Beginner Turns:-

i. ‘Chicken turn’ is where you start side slipping across the slope then you initiate the turn with the upper body so then your board starts to face down hill then shift the weight toward your lead foot so your board turns back across the same way you started.

ii. Start with heels first then go to toes.

iii. Next get them to do a single heel side turn (C turns).

iv. Then a single toe side turn.

7. Linked Beginner Turn: –

i. Once comfortable doing single turns start by linking turns together

ii. Repetition and mileage.

iii. Talk about turn shape and turn size

iv. Play around with that (Mileage of different terrains)

v. Cat and mouse and back seat driver exercises

8. Novice Turns:-

i. Add in flexion and extension into your turns to increases pressure control.

ii. Exercises- head shoulders knee and toes, touch your toes, tip and tail, and hopping and jumping whilst transversing.
