Removing Cat Urine Odors and Stains From the Carpet

Pet odor and stain removal from any animal can be difficult but it seems as if urine is the worst. Even if you have a litter box for your cat, they may still find your carpet more to their liking when they have to urinate. The best solution for pet odor and stain removal when it is urine is to use cleaners that are enzyme and bacteria-based. Just make sure that you follow the directions on the cleaner.

Cat urine is not only a way for them to get rid of liquid toxins from their body but it is also a way of marking their territory. Their urine is so strong because of its protein content. If you use a common household cleaner to try and get rid of the smell, it will only mask it. After a time the crystals in their urine becomes reactivated and you have this strong irritating odor again. There are some home remedies to remove the strong urine odor from the carpet. Before you can get rid of the smell though, you first you have to get rid of the stain.

If you see your cat urinating on the floor or feel wetness on your bare feet it is most likely cat urine. To get rid of a fresh stain blot it from the carpet by using dry cloth pieces or absorbent paper towels. Put them above the urine spot and let it stay there for a couple of minutes to allow the material to soak up all of the urine on the surface of carpet. Replace them with new ones and gently on new ones. After soaking up the urine a couple of times you will need to stand on the paper to get out the last bit of urine in the deeper layers. Make sure that when you are cleaning up the urine that you do not rub it because this will just spread it over a wider area, giving you more area to clean.

Once you have the urine blotted up it is time to work on pet odor and stain removal. To get better result use a carpet shampooer and rinse with warm water. It may take a couple of tries until you get the stain out, especially if it is an older stain. Once you have the stain out you can work on removing the odor. Mix three parts water to one part vinegar in a spray bottle and spray on the area and use the same blotting methods. Sprinkle some baking soda and let dry after scrubbing into the spot with a brush. Once dry, vacuum, and if the smell is still there, repeat until it is gone.
