I had one of my therapy cat visits scheduled on Sunday, and it was pretty nice! As you can see, my human got me a new holiday collar to wear so I can give my candy striped bow tie a break.
There were two dog teams making visits along with us. One was a small Jack Russell terrier mix, and the other was a big black lab. Because there were three therapy teams and two coaches, we were able to cover all the floors in record time!
One of the good things about having three teams is that I was able to spend extra time with the patients I visited. They were all older people, and bedridden, so I got to lie down on the bed with them. Here is how that works: my human grabs some clean sheets from the racks or the room where they keep them, and when somebody wants a visit, she spreads the sheet over them. Then she places me on the sheets (sometimes I jump up there, but my human prefers to place me), and I settle in. I just walk over and lie down and relax for the patient. When we’re done, she gathers up the sheet and takes it with us.
The patients can pet me or do whatever they want with me, even if it’s not always what I am normally used to. One patient on this visit patted me like a dog. Another one affectionally grasped my head in a way most kitties would not like, but I accepted. I know they mean well, so it’s okay. I enjoy my visits a lot. During the last one, I laid down next to the patient, curled up, put my paw on her arm and purred myself to sleep. Because my human was so reluctant to disturb us, we came out to find the two coaches and one of the teams waiting for us. The black lab was in the room next to us, and he finished up a few moments later.
How do I know how to do all the things I do when I am visiting patients? I just do! The funny thing, as my human told one of the people we saw, is that at home I don’t usually sleep on the bed! Between Binga and Boodie and the two humans, it’s awfully crowded so I often just sleep on the cat tree.
